Many of our native plants and animals are dying
out and we need to take special care of them to make sure they're
still around in years to come. Predators - like rats and stoats
- kill our cool native birds, especially chicks. Other animals
introduced to New Zealand - like possums - eat our native plants.
Not only is that bad news for our plants, it also means fewer
flowers for our nectar-eating birds and fewer places for native
birds, insects and reptiles to live. (Possums get the serious
munchies - there are around 70 million of them chewing through
7 million tonnes of vegetation a year, especially natives. They
also feast on birds' eggs and chicks and native snails.)
Lots of New Zealanders work very hard to help conserve our
native plants and animals. Our small offshore islands are
often a good safe place to nurture endangered species. That's
because, once you get rid of the plant and animal pests, it's
hard for them to get back. More about that when you play the
game and conserve your very own island.
