For Sale

The images are part of an ongoing (never ending?) series recording things that are for sale and the way they are sold. What we make and sell and what we value and buy reveals something of who are as groups and individuals. The photos seem to suggest bigger ideas than the  things they record - the unachievable ideal of the mannequins behind bars or the dream wedding dress mirrored in the reality of an urban street.

About the Artist

Most of my decisions made on the basis of 'would it be interesting?'.

This has found me living and working in UK, Africa, the Central Pacific and now New Zealand. My photography has been the 'key' for me to living in and exploring these countries. I am presently Director of Photography at Massey University in Wellington which gives me the chance to explore long term projects.

My most recent work 'Akekia! Traditional Dance in Kiribati' was published in 2002 and won the Montana book award for illustration. I am currently working on documenting the traditional canoes of Kiribati. Photography continues to be the way I try make sense of the world around me and to understand something of who I am. To paraphrase Wilhelm Dilthey; to see yourself don't try to look inwards, rather take the longer more circuitous route to look outward at what you have produced.
